Introduction to Hefei University
Hefei University (合肥学院, website) is a full-time, public-funded undergraduate college. Its predecessor was Hefei United University, which was founded in 1980. In 1985, the Anhui Provincial People’s Government and the German Government of Lower Saxony signed an agreement in accordance with the “German University of Applied Sciences to build a model applied undergraduate college” Hefei University (formerly Hefei United University) has become one of the two exemplary application-oriented universities that the German side has assisted in building in China. In March 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the former Hefei United University, Hefei Education College, and Hefei Normal School merged to form Hefei College.
Hefei University is the “Sino-German Education Cooperation Demonstration Base”, one of the first batch of 63 pilot schools to train master degree graduates, and the first batch of 61 schools undertaking the “Outstanding Engineer Education Training Program” I. When Hefei University was established, it took the lead in proposing a “local, applied, and internationalized” school positioning, borrowed from the experience of German universities of applied sciences, and carried out systematic reforms and practices around the key elements of application-oriented talent training. The applied talent training system has trained a large number of high-quality applied talents for regional development. He won the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in 2009 and the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in 2014, which filled the gap of universities in Anhui province. In 2015, he won the 4th National Education Reform and Innovation Special Award. In 2016, it cooperated with Continental AG and German University of Applied Sciences to design a “dual system” higher education major, and explored a new mode of integration of production and education. In 2018, he won one first prize and one second prize in the National Teaching Achievement Award. Received the right to grant a master’s degree in 2018. In 2018 and 2019, he won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award for two consecutive years, and he was listed on the Top 100 Patent List of Anhui Province for five consecutive years.
In the past five years, Hefei University students have won 3,311 provincial awards and above, including 1,279 national awards. Such as the Portuguese 2016 RoboCup Open Championship, the 20th and 21st RoboCup Robot Football World Cup 7th, 6th, the 10th “Siemens Cup” China Intelligent Manufacturing Challenge National Finals Grand Prize (first place) and so on. The graduate employment rate has always been at the forefront of the province. It is a pacesetter for employment in colleges and universities in the province. About 70% of graduates are employed in Anhui and about 55% are employed in fertilizer. It is known as “the cradle of engineer training in Hefei”. In 2018, the school entered the first batch of enrollment as a whole, and the minimum scores for liberal arts and science submissions were 14 and 15 points higher than a control line, respectively. In 2019, the lowest scores for art and science submissions were 11 and 14 points higher than a control line, respectively.
Hefei University school closely adheres to the “application-oriented” school positioning and strongly advocates applied technology research. In cooperation with Chinese and foreign enterprises and governments, 45 high-level production, academic, research, and other cooperation platforms have been established for the Hefei University Water Environment and Pollution Control Academician Expert Workstation, Functional Ionic Liquid Power Battery Electrolyte Academician Workstation, Sino-German Industry 4.0 Promotion Center, and Chaohu Research Institute. Strengthen scientific and technological innovation and services. Exploring the “unmanned factory” with Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Bogo in Germany, co-construction of the “Building and Materials R & D Center” with the German Westward Group, and cooperation with BYK in Germany Improved the school’s ability to serve economic development. The school focuses on regional cultural research and inheritance, co-constructs the “Research Center of Chaohu Lake Culture and Economic and Social Development”, “Huaijun and Liu Mingchuan Research Center”, etc., and organizes “Straits across the Taiwan Strait (Hefei) to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Liu Mingchuan’s first Governor in Taiwan” , Compiled “Great Lakes-Hefei Regional Culture Research Series” and “Ten Lectures on Hefei Culture”, etc. The number of applied achievements in humanities and social sciences has always been among the top universities in the province.
Hefei University has a long history of international schooling, actively plays a role of bridge, and promotes private diplomacy with educational confidence. At present, the school has established cooperative relations with 71 universities in Germany, Korea, Japan, the United States, Italy, Spain, Austria, Britain, Russia and other countries and Taiwan. There is a Chinese-foreign cooperative education program approved by the Ministry of Education. There are more than 4,300 students studying abroad, and more than 2,000 students from Germany, South Korea, Russia, Cambodia, Nepal, and Laos come to school to study and practice. Five foreign experts won the Chinese Government’s “Friendship Award”. For five consecutive years, foreign experts and professors from our university were invited to attend the Chinese New Year Forum of Premier Li Keqiang. In 2015, three foreign visiting professors were invited to participate in the activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War. Since 2000, more than 500 delegations from the German government, social groups, friendly schools and companies have visited the school. Former German Federal President and current chairman of the Global Alliance of Small and Medium Enterprises visited the school four times. On August 30, 2016, our school established the first Confucius Institute in Stralsund, Germany, which is also the first Confucius Institute in Anhui Province in Western Europe. Merkel was invited to unveil the Confucius Institute and was hailed as “a milestone in the history of the Confucius Institute.” Hosted the 8th “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for German Middle School Students, the 12th Korean Speech Contest, and the 4th “Hefei Academy Cup” Chinese Speech Contest. The school has “Anhui China-Germany Center” and “China Hefei-South Korea Center” to provide services for regional foreign cooperation. Assist Hefei to introduce projects such as Continental Tire Company and Xiweide Group. The German Logistics Association set up the German Logistics Association Hefei Branch in our school. Help Hefei become a sister city with Osnabruck, Rostock, and Seosan, South Korea. Help Huangshan and Stralsund to become sister cities.
On October 30, 2015, Premier Li Keqiang and German Chancellor Angela Merkel jointly inspected the school. Li Keqiang pointed out: “The development and growth of Hefei University in the past 30 years is a successful model of practical cooperation between China and Germany. “China-Germany cooperation will have a more brilliant 30 years in the future” expectations. German Chancellor Angela Merkel praised the Hefei Institute as “a shining example of Sino-German cooperation in the past 30 years”. The two prime ministers jointly decided to set up a Sino-German educational cooperation demonstration base and fund in Hefei College. The Ministry of Education and Anhui Province jointly formulated the “Sino-German Education Cooperation Demonstration Base and Cooperation Fund Construction Plan” and submitted it to the State Council to determine the construction goal of “one model school, six platforms”. Anhui Province and Hefei City have included “Supporting the Construction of a Sino-German Education Cooperation Demonstration Base in Hefei University” as part of the provincial and municipal “Thirteenth Five-Year” development plan, Anhui “Five Developments” action plan, and provincial education undertaking “Thirteenth Five-Year” plan. Construction is currently progressing smoothly.
At present, Hefei University has about 16,256 full-time students. The school has a total of 1,120 faculty members, including 978 full-time teachers, 460 with titles of associate senior or higher (of which 145 are high), and 281 have doctorates. There are more than 20 foreign teachers at school all year round, 4 of whom have won the Chinese Government’s “Friendship Award” and 11 have received the “Huangshan Friendship Award”. The school covers an area of 1255.92 acres, with a building area of more than 530,000 square meters, and a total value of 362 million yuan in teaching equipment. The school has 16 teaching units and 11 secondary colleges, with a total of 61 undergraduate majors, 1 Chinese-foreign cooperation major, and 2 specialized majors. There are 5 specialties with national characteristics, 4 specialties under the “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan”, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot program for undergraduate majors, 3 foreign cooperative education programs approved by the Ministry of Education, and 3 national college students’ practice teaching bases. In 2019, the school won the first batch of 5 national first-class undergraduate majors and 10 provincial first-class undergraduate majors.
