Job Overview
The Teacher Librarian at CIS Guangzhou will foster a love for reading, promote literacy, and support the academic success of our diverse student body through innovative library programming and effective library management. By collaborating with teachers to integrate information literacy and research skills into the curriculum, the Teacher Librarian will enhance student learning. Additionally, the librarian will curate a diverse collection of resources that reflects global perspectives and promotes critical thinking. Through innovative programming and outreach, the Teacher Librarian will encourage lifelong learning and empower students to become independent thinkers. Ultimately, this role is essential in nurturing a vibrant school community that values literacy and academic integrity.
Key Responsibilities
1. Reading Support Programming
• Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive reading support programs that cater to various age groups and reading levels
• Organize and lead reading initiatives, book clubs, and literacy events to engage students and promote a culture of reading
• Collaborate with teachers to integrate reading materials and resources into the curriculum, supporting classroom instruction
• Provide individualized reading support and recommendations to students based on their interests and reading levels
2. Library Management
• Oversee the daily operations of the Learning Commons, ensuring it is a welcoming and resource-rich environment for students and staff
• Manage the acquisition, cataloging, and circulation of library materials, ensuring a diverse and up-to-date collection that reflects the interests and needs of the student body using the Destiny Library Management system
• Maintain an organized and accessible Learning Commons/library space, including the arrangement of books, resources, and technology
• Implement and oversee library policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with copyright and intellectual property laws
• Oversee the conduct of students in the Learning Commons
3. Collaboration and Community Engagement
• Collaborate with faculty, administration, and parents to enhance the library’s role in the school community
• Develop partnerships with local libraries and organizations to enrich library programming and resources
• Conduct workshops and training sessions for students and staff on effective research strategies, information literacy, and digital citizenship
4. Professional Development
• Stay current with trends in library science, literacy education, and technology integration
• Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge relevant to the role
From time to time, the Teacher Librarian may be assigned other duties relevant to the role and/or the development of the Learning Commons at CIS Guangzhou.
Skills and Qualifications
• Undergraduate degree in education, teacher certification, and prior teaching experience (preferably in an international or multicultural setting)
• Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (preferred) or additional qualifications as a teacher librarian for K-12 schools
• Strong knowledge of children’s and young adult literature
• Proficiency in library management systems and practices
• Well-versed in digital literacy and technology integration, able to guide students in navigating both physical and digital resources
• A passion for promoting reading and research, along with experience in developing engaging library programs and activities
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• Able to work collaboratively in a diverse and dynamic school environment
