Introduction to Jiangsu University of Science and Technology
Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (JUST, website) has a history dating back to the year of 1866 when the Fujian Shipping and Polity School was founded. In 1952, the first secondary technical school of shipbuilding in P.R. China was set up in Shanghai by theShipping Bureau of Ministry of Industrial Machinery. In August of 1953, after the incorporation of courses of Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine Engineering from some vocational schools in Shanghai and Fujian, the Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry School officially started to recruit students. In 1970, the School was relocated to Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province. In 1978 and 1993, the University was upgraded to undergraduate-level higher educational institution and was renamed twice, respectively called as Zhenjiang Shipbuilding Institute and East ChinaShipbuilding Institute. In 2004, after the incorporation of Jianghai Vocational Business School and the Sericulture Research Institute of Chinese Academy ofAgricultural Sciences, the University under its current name came into existence. Now the University is a Higher Educational Institution affiliated toJiangsu Province. In 2012, the University was co-constructed by JiangsuProvincial Government, China State Shipbuilding Cooperation and ChinaShipbuilding Industry Cooperation. And in 2016, JUST was jointly constructed byJiangsu Provincial Government and State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense.In 2018, JUST is placed 198th in Wu Shulian Chinese University Ranking and 187th in China’s Best University Ranking.
With its main location in the scenic and historic Zhenjiang city, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology now occupies four purpose-built campuses, which cover more than428 acres in total, with three campuses in Zhenjiang and one in Zhangjiagang ofSuzhou. A new modern campus covering over 387 acres in now under construction. JUST currently manages the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs through 15 schools. By far, the University has set up 1 post-doctoral station, 4 doctoral degree awarding units of first-level disciplines, 11doctoral degree awarding units of second-level disciplines, 18 master degree awarding units of first-level disciplines, 71 master degree awarding units of second-level disciplines and 59 undergraduate programs. Under the guidance and assistance of over 2000 faculty and administrative staff, the University now has about 23,129 undergraduates over 3,687 postgraduates and 501 full-time overseas students actively engaged in multiple discipline areas.
Academic and Research Strength
JUST now is an engineering-oriented university with distinctive characteristics which has formed a well-established talent training system of bachelor, master and doctoral degree levels. It is now one of the key construction universities of JiangsuProvince and is a university of recognized excellence by the Ministry of Education of China. It is also one of the cultivated universities of excellent engineers of the MOEC. In 2016, JUST successfully passed the Undergraduate Education Evaluation by the MOEC.
With years of devoted work in education, the University has developed into a significant education institution for China’s major industries. Its academic strength in areas of naval architecture, marine engineering and sericulture study is widely recognized and has specially helped to train thousands of highly qualified professionals and researchers forChina’s shipbuilding industry. In addition to its contribution in ship building areas, the University has also achieved distinguished accomplishments in ocean and sericulture studies.Currently,JUST’s engineering is listed in the top 1% of Essential Science Indicators(ESI).
Global Involvement
With the aim to get more globally involved, JUST has launched various scientific and educational cooperative programs with partners from many countries and regions, turning JUST campus into an increasingly diversified community. Cooperation activities range from joint education programs, course articulation programs, course certificate programs, faculty exchange to joint research projects.
In 2012, for the purpose of internationalization, the University started to recruit international students. Other than our academic strength, with the understanding that for many international students, living in China is a completely new experience, we have a dedicated support team that offers ongoing service to all international students. Currently, in addition toEnglish-delivered programs that are specially designed for international students, all existing programs are open to international applicants, the delivering language of which is mandarin Chinese.
