Tsinghua International School, located on the campus of Tsinghua University, is a grade 1-12 school providing a unique educational experience. The school utilizes a inquiry based, North American approach to instruction coupled with Eastern influence. The Primary school program places the student at the center of all experiences.
Position Description
We are seeking a Primary Homeroom Teacher who understands and utilizes elements of Progressive education during all phases of student engagement, instruction and classroom organization. This individual must demonstrate a willingness to work cooperatively with other staff members as well as parents. While most responsibilities are delineated below, the individual must be flexible and willing to lend a hand when and where needed.
Responsibilities
– Provide a nurturing, caring, supportive environment for students.
– Utilize inquiry methods of instruction and follow the elements of Progressive Education.
– Provide instruction in the core subjects of Reading, Writing, Math, and Social Studies.
– Begin and end each day with a class meeting incorporating the school’s Core Values into the sessions.
– Utilize “Responsive Classroom” as a tool to encourage positive social and emotional growth in each individual as well as the group.
– Work cooperatively with the “Specials” teachers (art, music, etc) to support students and to design interdisciplinary projects and/or units.
– Work with the ESL students within the regular class while maintaining an English only classroom and collaborating with the ESL teacher.
– Promote cross-cultural understanding among the students.
– Maintain a strong, positive and informative relationship with parents.
– Work supportively with the Teaching Assistant providing on site training as needed.
– Engage with the other Primary teachers as well as Secondary teachers as appropriate.
– Prepare for and participate in all parent conferences.
– Prepare narrative student evaluations (report cards) four times per year.
– Create and lead an after school club for primary students during the two after-school club cycles each year.
– Utilize The Reading and Writing Workshop for instruction in Language Arts
– Participate actively in staff meetings and committee meetings some of which are held after school. Follow and/or develop units using the “Understanding by Design” format.
– Actively engage in professional development during special sessions as well as during the normal school day.
– Occasionally cover a class for a colleague.
– Participate in all school special events that may occur in the evenings and/or on weekends.
Qualifications
– Native speaker of English
– Bachelor’s degree
– Teaching Certification in Early Childhood or Elementary Education, preferred
– Experience working effectively with young children
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills
– Two years experience or less if the teacher is certified.
