Scope of Responsibility:
The MYP EAL Teacher is responsible for providing tailored language support to students whose first language is not English, enabling them to achieve academic success. This role involves developing and implementing an engaging, differentiated curriculum focusing on language acquisition, communication skills, and cultural integration. The teacher creates a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student confidence and encourages participation.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Curriculum Planning & Delivery:
Develop and implement an EAL curriculum aligned with the IB MYP framework, focusing on language acquisition and academic language development.
Use a variety of teaching methodologies, including scaffolding and differentiation, to meet the diverse language needs of EAL students.
Integrate culturally relevant materials and real-life contexts to enhance language learning and student engagement.
Assessment & Feedback:
Design and conduct formative and summative assessments to evaluate language proficiency and progress in English.
Provide timely, constructive feedback that empowers students to improve their language skills and academic performance.
Monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies based on individual needs and growth.
Classroom Environment & Student Engagement:
Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom atmosphere that celebrates diversity and encourages risk-taking in language use.
Facilitate interactive lessons and group activities that promote collaboration among EAL students and their peers.
Foster a culture of respect, empathy, and responsibility among all students, ensuring they feel valued and supported.
Collaboration & Professional Development:
Collaborate with subject teachers to support EAL students in mainstream classes, helping them access the curriculum effectively.
Participate in professional development workshops focused on best practices for teaching EAL students and enhancing language acquisition.
Share successful strategies and insights with colleagues to improve instructional quality and student outcomes across the school.
Student Support & Mentorship:
Provide targeted academic support and language tutoring to EAL students, addressing individual learning needs.
Act as a mentor, guiding students in their English language learning journey and encouraging academic and personal growth.
Establish strong connections with students and families to foster a supportive learning community beyond the classroom.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field (master’s degree in education or a relevant discipline is preferred)
Certification: Valid teaching certification in TESOL, EAL, or ESL/EFL; Training in the IB MYP framework is advantageous.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in EAL or related fields; Experience working with multilingual and culturally diverse student populations is highly desirable.
Skills:
Strong understanding of language acquisition theories and practices. Strong knowledge of second language acquisition theories and practices.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage students, parents, and colleagues.
Ability to differentiate instruction and employ effective strategies for language learners.
Proficiency in using technology and digital resources to enhance language instruction and support learning.
