Purpose of Role
The Life Skills (PSHE / Health) Teacher is responsible for delivering well-planned, relevant and interesting schemes of work and resources for Life Skills. The purpose of the position includes:
• Develop and implement resources and strategies aligned the updated skills-based YCIS curriculum and safeguarding best practice.
• Deliver well planned lessons matched to the students’ age and ability.
• Assess and report on students’ progress.
• Promote student wellness through curriculum as well as outside structured lessons ie theme days and weeks, Co-Curricular Activity programme etc.
Key Responsibilities
Key tasks/duties
• Consult with YCYW curriculum drivers, Head of Inclusion & Designated Safeguarding Lead, and outside agencies where necessary to strengthen the programme.
• Develop and contribute to the School Strategic Plan and monitor throughout the year.
• Cooperate with Student Counsellor and Year Leader and section Coordinator to ensure coherence and progression.
B. Specific tasks/duties
• Ensure that student records are kept up-to-date on ManageBac.
• Ensure all assessment deadlines are met.
• Develop and co-ordinate further opportunities for students to develop their achievement in Life Skills outside the curriculum.
• Attend regular meetings as required by the Life Skills Coordinator.
C. Additional tasks/duties
• Contribute to the maintenance of the school’s ethos by expecting high standards from all of the students
• Contribute to the Co-Curricular Activity programme and support supervision of students in non-timetabled lesson periods.
• Undertake other reasonable tasks as directed by the Head of Teaching & Learning, Vice Principals, Co-Principals etc..
D. Child Protection
• Be responsible for responding to a variety of situations throughout the day, working closely with staff, students, and families to provide tailored support where needed.
• Collaborate with colleagues to ensure that all safeguarding protocols are met, and that children feel supported in a nurturing environment.
• Continue to develop the strategy relating to safeguarding, managing its delivery to help create a safe environment for our students, and ensure that all stakeholders are able to and feel comfortable to raise any concerns.
Additional Responsibilities
• Takes on extra responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principals
• Key roles and responsibilities include but not limited to the above. There may be times when school leaders need to request your help with other duties.
Support
• Support from the Life Skills Coordinator, Head of Teaching & Learning, Vice Principals, and Co-Principals
• Professional Learning and Training as required
Professional Qualities
• Bachelor’s Degree and recognised teaching qualification/license
• Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administration, students, families, and key contacts at other organisations
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate rationally with faculty, students, and parents alike
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Proven confident and engaging presentation skills
• Evidence of a capacity to operate effectively in a cross-cultural environment
• An organised, focused and goal-orientated personality capable of innovative forward thinking
• High levels of personal integrity
• An ability to generate ideas and implement new programmes and systems
• Demonstrable understanding of ethical and reputational issues
• Positive attitude, adaptable, empathetic, and committed to making a difference in the lives of young people with excellent time-management and organisational skills
• Commitment towards school improvement and connected to the YCIS School Community
• Experience in safeguarding children and supporting mental health and well-being is highly beneficial.
